Some of the best money I have spent is on a three-inch piece of stainless steel that has been hanging from my keychain for about five years.
It is called The Mighty Bar, and it is exactly what it looks like: a tiny pry bar with a pointed, beveled end. No moving parts. No battery. No app. No subscription. Not even a tiny instruction manual pretending this is more complicated than it is.
It is just a simple little tool—and it is awesome.
The Mighty Bar opens things. It pries things. It turns a flat-head screw when the screwdriver is somewhere else. It scores a line, scrapes off stubborn material, gets under an edge, and handles all sorts of small jobs that are annoying precisely because they are too minor to justify walking back to the toolbox.
That is really the point.
There are tools in my garage that can do every one of those jobs better. The Mighty Bar wins because it is already in my pocket.
The best everyday-carry gear has a particular kind of balance. It needs to be useful often enough to earn the space, but small enough that carrying it never becomes a decision. Too large, too heavy, too fragile, or too expensive, and eventually it gets left at home.
The Mighty Bar disappears onto the keychain. At 2.9 inches long, it is smaller than most of the keys around it. The solid stainless-steel construction makes it sturdy enough for the ordinary little acts of leverage and persuasion I ask of it. It is also relatively inexpensive, so I use it like a tool instead of protecting it like jewelry.
That combination matters:
- Small enough to carry everywhere. It adds almost no ceremony to leaving the house.
- Sturdy enough to use. It can take the small, messy jobs that would otherwise tempt me to abuse a key, fingernail, or pocket knife.
- Simple enough to trust. There is nothing to charge, unfold, configure, or lose.
- Inexpensive enough to enjoy. I do not hesitate before putting it to work.
Apparently I am not alone. At the time I checked, Amazon showed a 4.7-star rating from 1,997 ratings. That is a lot of collective enthusiasm for what is, fundamentally, a very small bar of metal.
But I get it.
Most products try to impress you with how much they can do. The Mighty Bar is great because it does a handful of humble things, takes up almost no room, and shows up every single time.
Always there when I need it. Never in the way when I do not.
That is a pretty good definition of a useful thing.
